Tips to help your child transition into a new school

My son recently started “big boy” school as he likes to refer to it. As excited as I am, a lot of nerves come with this new adventure. We decided to get some tips from someone who has experience as an administrator and as a mom, Tashana Frink

Tashana, you were a teacher before becoming a Vice Principal, did you find that transition difficult?

The transition was not difficult but it tends to have its challenges. For example, in the classroom, I only had to focus on my group of students and parents. As an Assistant Principal, I must focus on the entire school and community. I have to ensure the children and teachers have the resources they need to succeed.

As someone who has taught small children, what tips would you give parents on helping their little one adjust to their new school and schedule?

Some tips would be:
  1. Make sure your child has all the materials they need for school.
  2. Make sure they have a decent bedtime.
  3. Stick to your afternoon routines.
  4. Try your best to help them remain organized.

For parents with older children, what are some ways to ensure your child has a successful school year?

Some tips would be:
  1. Assist your child in being responsible and accountable for their own learning.
  2. Help make sure they are completing all of their work inside and outside of the classroom.
  3. Ask questions!
  4. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals.

What advice would you give educators on maintaining a good work/life balance?

Please make sure you implement self-care. Try your best not to work after hours and on the weekends. Enjoy your time and do things that you love!

You wear many hats, you’re a mom and administrator, and recently wrote your first children’s book. How do you make sure you don’t bring work home and still have time with your family and for yourself?

Now for me, this can be hard because once I put Kai to bed, I’m either answering emails for work, tutoring, or other business ventures. But I try to remain as organized as possible. I plan out all my meetings and activities so nothing overlaps. If I feel overwhelmed, I don’t have a problem with rescheduling to regroup.
